AI solutions engineer
Also known as: AI SE, AI pre-sales engineer, AI technical account manager
AI solutions engineers live at the boundary between a vendor's product and a customer's needs. When a company is evaluating an AI API, a coding tool, or an enterprise AI product, the solutions engineer handles technical questions, runs demos, builds proof-of-concept integrations, and guides onboarding. The role requires understanding both the vendor's capabilities and the customer's existing stack and constraints.
The difference from a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is in depth and duration. A solutions engineer typically works across many customers in a pre-sales or early adoption capacity, while an FDE often embeds deeply with a single customer for an extended period to build something specific. In practice, the boundaries blur, and many AI companies use the titles interchangeably.
As AI tools proliferate, solutions engineering has become a meaningful career path for people who are technical but enjoy customer interaction more than deep individual contributor work. The skill set rewards breadth: you need to understand enough about LLMs, APIs, RAG patterns, and agent architecture to answer hard questions, but the primary output is customer success rather than shipped code.
