Claude in Chrome
Also known as: Claude Chrome extension, Claude browser integration
Claude in Chrome gives Claude access to the content of whatever page a user is currently browsing, enabling contextual AI assistance without requiring the user to copy-paste text into claude.ai. The integration is separate from Anthropic's agentic browser features (like computer use via the API): it is a consumer-facing convenience feature that makes Claude feel more like a persistent co-pilot in the browser rather than a separate app you have to switch to.
Announced in 2025 and rolling out progressively to Pro subscribers, Claude in Chrome is comparable to Google's Gemini in Chrome (which rolled out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers) and Microsoft's Copilot integration in Edge. The pattern reflects a broader industry direction: AI assistants are moving from standalone apps toward embedded browser and OS-level presence, where they can observe context and offer help without the user explicitly initiating a conversation.
For builders, Claude in Chrome is most relevant as a product surface to understand when thinking about where AI assistants are heading, and as competition context if you're building browser-integrated or web-embedded AI tools. It is not an API product: there is no developer SDK for building extensions on top of Claude in Chrome. The adjacent developer capability is computer use via the Claude API, which enables agents to control browsers programmatically.
