Midjourney launched in open beta in July 2022 and quickly became the go-to tool for designers, marketers, and concept artists who care deeply about aesthetic quality. Its outputs tend to have considered lighting, color harmony, and composition in ways that competing tools often don't match out of the box. The current flagship model is V7, which was a complete architectural rebuild released in April 2025, with a V8 alpha available as of early 2026.
What makes Midjourney distinctive is intentionality of output. Where other generators chase prompt fidelity, Midjourney leans into art direction. Features like Style Reference (--sref) and Character Reference (--cref) let you lock in a visual language or character across multiple images, which is genuinely useful for brand work and serial illustration. The trade-off is less raw programmability: an official API was in closed beta through 2025, so most production pipelines that need to generate images programmatically still route around it.
Midjourney has no free tier as of 2026. Plans run from $10 to $120 a month depending on how much fast GPU time you need and whether you want private generations (Stealth Mode, available on Pro and above). It also added image-to-video capability in 2025, though that remains secondary to its core image generation strengths.
