Audio Overview

Audio Overview was the NotebookLM feature that went viral in late 2024. Upload a research paper, a book, or a collection of documents, and NotebookLM generates a 10-20 minute conversation between two synthetic podcast hosts who discuss the material. The hosts ask each other questions, push back, and surface interesting points, which gives the format more cognitive texture than a plain summary.

The feature's popularity created a new use pattern: using AI to turn written material into something listenable during commutes or exercise. Google has since expanded the format, adding Video Overviews and exporting the podcast audio technology to other Workspace products. Gemini users can now generate similar audio conversations from any document they're working with.

For content creators and educators, Audio Overview represents a new output format that AI can produce natively. For researchers, it's a passive absorption mode: you upload papers and the AI talks you through them. Google's broader strategy is positioning NotebookLM as the default tool for making dense information accessible in multiple formats.
