Comet is built on Chromium (the same open-source base as Chrome) and launched on desktop in mid-2025 before expanding to Android and iOS in early 2026, where it's now available to anyone for free. Its differentiated angle is Perplexity's answer-engine heritage: responses are citation-grounded, meaning claims link back to real sources rather than being generated freely. That matters especially when the agent is taking actions on your behalf, since accuracy compounds.
For builders, the more interesting layer is Comet as a distribution wedge. Perplexity lets paid subscribers choose which AI model powers the browser agent, which is unusual. That model-picker positioning reflects a broader bet: that the browser, not the chat app, becomes the dominant surface for agentic AI. Enterprise deployments via MDM (a way for IT teams to push software to company devices at scale) are already available, signaling Comet is being taken seriously beyond the individual power-user market.
