Custom service work is open-ended: each client engagement is different, pricing varies, and delivery depends on context. A productized service narrows the scope until it can be sold and delivered reliably, like a product. 'We set up your AI customer support agent in two weeks for a fixed fee' is a productized service. So is a monthly retainer to maintain and improve a specific automation stack.
AI makes productized services more viable because the underlying delivery is faster. Work that once took a team of developers weeks can now be scaffolded in days with AI-assisted coding. This compresses delivery time enough that fixed-price engagements can still be profitable, and the same template can be reused across many clients with minimal customization.
For solo builders in the TNB community, productized services are often a bridge between pure consulting and software. You start by doing the work manually for clients, identify the repeatable core, package it with defined inputs and outputs, and eventually automate enough of the delivery that the margin improves. The end state might be a subscription product; the path goes through productized services.
