Sora
Also known as: Sora 2, OpenAI Sora
Sora was first announced by OpenAI in early 2024 as a research preview and generated significant attention for video quality that was noticeably ahead of contemporary tools. The production release, including API access for developers, came later in 2025 as Sora 2. The API supports clip generation, video editing, and video extension, and Sora 2 Pro supports 1080p output.
For builders, the practical use cases for Sora are primarily content generation (product demos, social content, explainer videos), rapid prototyping of visual concepts, and embedding video generation into creative tools or media pipelines. The API follows a cost-per-second-of-video model rather than per-token.
Sora competes most directly with Google's Veo (now Veo 3) in the AI video space. Both are diffusion-based video models that take text prompts; Veo 3 added native audio generation as a differentiator. Neither is yet reliable enough for precision-dependent production video without human review, but both are fast enough for creative iteration.
