The model is distinct from AI shopping assistants or recommendation engines. A chatbot suggests; an agentic system acts. It moves money, generates an order, and handles returns when instructed to. In 2026, early production deployments include OpenAI's instant checkout feature inside ChatGPT, Perplexity's Comet browser, Google AI Mode's shopping integration, and Amazon's Rufus agent. These systems rely on commerce protocols like UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) and AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol) to interact with merchant backends without bespoke per-merchant integrations.
For builders, agentic commerce reshapes how products get discovered. An AI agent deciding what to buy does not browse a category page or respond to a banner ad: it queries structured data, evaluates against constraints, and selects based on the merchant's machine-readable product feed and compliance with agent-compatible checkout standards. Shopify reported AI-driven traffic to its stores growing 8x year-over-year in Q1 2026, with orders from AI-powered searches up nearly 13x, signaling that this channel is already material rather than theoretical.
