Gemini app
Also known as: Google Gemini app, Gemini assistant, Bard
The Gemini app launched in February 2024 when Google rebranded its Bard chatbot to Gemini, signaling the transition to a new model family and a more capable product. It integrates with Google services by design: in paid tiers, Gemini can access Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Calendar to provide personalized, context-aware answers. It also powers AI Mode in Google Search for a growing set of queries.
As of May 2026, the free tier includes access to Gemini 2.5 Flash, limited 2.5 Pro access, Deep Research, Gemini Live (real-time voice conversation), Canvas (collaborative writing and document editing), and Gems (customizable AI mini-apps). The Google AI Pro tier ($19.99/month) expands to Gemini 3 model access in the US and higher Gemini Code Assist limits. The Ultra tier ($124.99 for three months) unlocks Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 2.5 Deep Think, Veo 3.1 video generation, and 25,000 monthly AI credits.
For builders, the Gemini app is most relevant as a product benchmark: it shows what Google is prioritizing in its consumer AI experience. The Gems feature (custom AI mini-apps with defined personas and instructions) is the Gemini app equivalent of ChatGPT's Custom GPTs. Gemini in Chrome, rolling out to Pro and Ultra subscribers in 2026, extends in-browser AI assistance directly into web pages, competing with browser-integrated AI tools from other providers.
