Google DeepMind was formed in April 2023 when Google merged its two flagship AI organizations: Google Brain, which had pioneered the transformer architecture and large-scale language model research, and DeepMind, the London-based lab founded in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman. The merger was intended to concentrate AI talent and compute resources under one roof as competition with OpenAI and Anthropic intensified.
The division is now responsible for Google's full generative AI stack. That includes the Gemini model family (Google's flagship multimodal LLMs), the Gemma family of open-weight models, the Veo video generation series, Imagen for image generation, Lyria for music, and deep research systems like AlphaFold for protein structure prediction. As of mid-2026, the current active Gemini generation is the Gemini 3.x series, with Gemini 3.5 Flash announced at Google I/O in May 2026.
For builders, Google DeepMind's work shows up through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, Vertex AI (now rebranded as the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform), and the Gemma open-weight models available for local deployment. The lab also maintains the Google ADK (Agent Development Kit) and Antigravity for agentic development, and ships research that frequently sets the pace on reasoning, multimodality, and agentic benchmarks.
