Stability AI launched Stable Diffusion in August 2022, releasing a text-to-image model as open weights at a time when image generation was dominated by closed APIs (DALL-E and Midjourney). The open release had an outsized impact: within months there were thousands of fine-tuned variants and an entire ecosystem of tools (Automatic1111, ComfyUI, InvokeAI) built around Stable Diffusion. It demonstrated that open-weight generative models could catalyze more downstream innovation than closed alternatives.
The company expanded into Stable Audio (text-to-audio), Stable Video Diffusion, and Stable 3D, along with image editing models like Stable Cascade and Stable Diffusion 3. However, Stability AI went through serious financial and leadership difficulties in 2024: founder Emad Mostaque resigned, the company faced cash flow problems, and several key researchers departed. The company restructured and has since operated with a smaller team.
As of 2026, Stability AI remains relevant primarily through the Stable Diffusion model ecosystem and its historical role in democratizing image generation. Its models are available through Amazon Bedrock (Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 and successive Stable Image models) and via direct download from Hugging Face. For builders working on image generation, Stability's open-weight models are an alternative to closed APIs like DALL-E or Midjourney when you need full control over the generation pipeline or want to fine-tune on custom imagery.
